Instructions for Care:

The Hawaiian Palm is very robust but requires certain care. It needs sufficient yet indirect light. Be sure the plant is put in a reasonably sheltered position. Avoid overwatering. A regular, but measured dose (with plant food every now and then) is preferable. The plant doesn't have a rest period during the year, although growth is stronger in summer than in winter. It flowers in witertime. New leaves are formed at the top. The older, bottom leaves may turn yellow and should be removed. A milky juice sometimes appears from the trunk but this is nothing to worry about. Regular removal of the oldest leaves helps the plant retain a fresh apprearance and stimulates growth

Yellowing of the leaves before they are old can also be a sign that the plants suffers from an insect attack. In most cases cleaning the plant's leaves (especially the underside) with lukewarm tap water is sufficient to solve the problem. Persistent attack by aphids or red spider mite may require applications of commercially-available treatments, consult a local florist or garden centre if this is the case.

How to prevent insect attacks:
  • Most plants will not tolerate draughts and problems with aphids often result under such conditions. Red spider mite flourishes in an overheated and dry climate. A night temperature of 12 degrees or below is recommended.
  • Placing the plants outside in summertime will help them to outgrow insect attacks.
  • A regular check and removal of attacked parts also helps to keep the problem under control.

It is very unlikely that an insect attack will kill an Hawaiian Palm, although it may occasionally lead to heavy loss of leaves. Once the attack has been brought under control by the methods described above, new leaves will appear and in a few weeks the plant will recover its former splendour completely. By following this advice you can enjoy your Hawaiian Palm for a long time and should see it bloom in winter.
